What Happens When an Animal Dies?

What happens when an animal dies? This is one of the questions I hear most often in my work as an animal communicator – and I really understand why everyone wants to know.  Our animals’ incredible souls simply don’t end their journey when they leave their physical bodies… and that’s actually really exciting news.

Through my 20+ years of telepathically connecting with animals who have crossed over, I’ve discovered that death is actually just their next step – kind of like graduating from one grade to the next. And the really amazing part – the part that when you finally understand it? Our animals view this transition completely differently (and much more holistically and positively) than we do.

What Happens When an Animal Dies?

When an animal dies (or as I usually say “crosses over to the Other Side”), they’re not just simply gone. They’re actually moving into the next phase of their soul’s journey.

Unlike us humans (who so often view death as an ending), animals embrace this transition because they’ve already mastered The Universal Language of Unconditional Love. They see death as something they’ve earned through completing their work here with us… and yes, they really do have important work they’re doing with us, which I’ll share more about below!

What Happens When Animals Die

When Does the Spirit Leave the Body?

Here’s something mind-blowing I’ve learned through connecting with thousands of animals – they begin preparing for their transition well before the actual moment of passing.

The spirit starts gently disconnecting from the physical body, sometimes months before anyone even suspects the animal might be ready to cross over. (This is actually nature’s way of making the process easier for them.)

Even if their passing appears to us to be an accident, the spiritual preparation for that death begins much, much earlier.

How Does the Soul Know When to Leave the Body?

Animals are incredibly wise about their timing (way more than we usually give them credit for and really more wise and intuitively connected than we could ever hope to be!).

Through my Soul Level Animal Communication® work, I’ve discovered that they actually plan their passing, choosing the perfect moment that will best serve their own journey and their human’s growth. They have this awe-inspiring internal wisdom that tells them exactly when it’s time.

What Happens When the Spirit Leaves the Body?

OK wait. It’s actually a beautiful process when an animal’s spirit finally leaves their body.

If you’re in pain and deeply grieving the loss of your beloved pet, it can be very challenging to think of their passing as a “beautiful process” but this is what I have come to know through many many years connecting with animals before, during, and after their death.

You could think of the spirit leaving the body as more of a simple release – their soul simply moves from the physical realm into the spiritual one, leaving the physical body behind.

The really amazing part?

Any pain or discomfort they might have been experiencing completely disappears in that moment. They move into a state of pure peace and unconditional love. For more detail about what happens when our pet’s spirit leaves the body, read this article!

How Long Does It Take for the Spirit to Leave the Body?

Although for our heart’s sake, we’d hope things would be quick, the process isn’t usually instant (though sometimes it can be!).

Remember how I mentioned they start preparing ahead of time? That preparation allows the actual final transition moment to be peaceful, from their point of view (even though to us it may not seem so). It’s like they turned down the dimmer switch on their physical connection and brought up full brightness on their spiritual one.

Where Do Animals Go After Death?

You’ve probably heard of the Rainbow Bridge (and if you’re feeling emotional about a pet’s passing, we have a special space in my Be Open Community just for those going through pet loss). But what I’ve learned is that the afterlife is actually even more beautiful than that popular poem suggests.

Each animal experiences their own perfect version of heaven – for some it might be sunny meadows, for others cozy cushions, but it’s always exactly what makes them happiest. I explain this in depth in my Animal Afterlife Book.

Who Greets My Pet in Heaven?

Ah the greeting! This may actually be the number one question people experiencing pet loss want to know about. They worry their pet was alone in their passing. The thing is – I don’t know if there is a more beautiful part of the animal’s death and dying process than what I’ve learned about this.

Every single being (human and animal) who is part of that animal’s soul family is there to greet them. And you want to know an even more exciting part? YOU are actually there to greet them too! I know that might sound strange since you’re still here, but remember – our souls are bigger than our physical bodies. Part of your soul is always there to welcome them home, along with all their other beloved humans and animal friends. You can read a whole lot more information on who greets my pet in Heaven here!

Why Did My Pet Die Now?

Through my animal communication work, I’ve learned that when an animal dies, they choose their timing very purposefully. They die ONLY once they’ve completed their soul’s purpose with us – when they’ve finished teaching us whatever lesson about unconditional love we needed to learn. (I talk about this extensively in my book “Animal Lessons” if you want to dive deeper into understanding your pet’s purpose.)

How to Deal with Pet Loss?

Losing a pet is one of the hardest experiences we go through… and you know what? That’s completely normal and okay. (And if you have friends and family telling you otherwise – get away from them!) You’re grieving so much because you love so much! But here’s something that may help you learn how to deal with pet loss: your passed over pet is still connected to you, just in a different way now. AND they’re always sending you signs and messages of hello (even if you’re not sure you’re receiving them yet!).

Helping Children Understand Pet Loss

Children and pet loss. This can be especially tricky to navigate when we, ourselves are also grieving. However, in my many years work with people who have lost pets, I’ve found that pretending things are OK does not work.

To help a child grieve the loss of a pet, be honest with them about your feelings so they can feel free to express their feelings. Explain as well that the relationship with their pet continues and it’s just about findind the new path foward. Children adapt to change a lot more easily than most adults do – they’re naturally more open to the spiritual connection that continues.

How to Communicate with Dead Pets?

OK. Here’s something that is probably going to sound crazy, but death doesn’t end our relationship with our pets… it just changes that relationship. They’re still watching over us, still sending us love, and communicating with us!

Through my Soul Level Animal Communication® method, I’ve helped thousands of people reconnect with their crossed-over pets, and you know what? How to communicate with dead pets is actually something anyone can learn to do.

Learn More About What Happens When an Animal Dies

If you’re feeling drawn to understand more about what happens when an animal dies or develop your own ability to communicate with animals (both here and on the Other Side), know that this is probably not a coincidence!

Our animals guide us to exactly what we need to learn, do, know, understand, and experience. In my book “The Incredible Animal Afterlife,” I dive deep into everything I’ve learned about what happens when animals cross over (according to my many animal communication readings). And if you’re feeling called to develop your own intuitive connections with animals, my Soul Level Animal Communication® courses can teach you how to trust and develop these natural abilities – because yes, we’re all born with them!

The animals in our lives are incredible teachers of the Universal Language of Unconditional Love, and that teaching doesn’t end when they cross over. They’re still here, still loving us, still helping us grow – just in a different way. And that’s something truly beautiful to celebrate.
