Signs your pet is trying to tell you something right now are everywhere… you’re just not always sure which ones actually count. After 25+ years as an animal communicator, I can tell you that your pet is communicating all the time, through their behavior, their body, and yes, intuitively. The real question isn’t whether they’re sending messages. It’s whether you know how to recognize them yet.
And most people don’t. Not because they’re not paying attention, but because they’re not sure what to look for. That’s what this post is going to help with.
Signs Your Pet Is Trying to Tell You Something Through Their Behavior
Not everything your pet does is a big intuitive message. Some of it is just… life. They’re hungry, they want to go out, they’re bored. But some of what they do carries a much bigger picture message, one that has nothing to do with dinner or walks. And learning to tell the difference? That’s where things get really interesting.
Why Does Your Pet Stare at You Without Looking Away?
When a pet gives you longer eye contact in a repeated, consistent way, it often means they’ve got a bigger message to share with you (one that goes beyond their immediate physical needs for sure!). The repetition is the key thing here. One stare is probably dinner. But several days of this is definitely worth paying attention to.
Actually, most people can FEEL the difference in their body. A “hey, I want a treat” stare feels very different than a searching stare that keeps coming back day after day. A lot of people describe a weight to it, like their animal isn’t just looking at them… they’re really trying to reach them.
And that’s usually exactly what’s happening! When a pet has a bigger soul level message trying to come through, they’ll keep returning to that eye contact. It usually takes us humans a while to clue in. But once you start recognizing that feeling, you really won’t miss it anymore.
What Does it Mean When Your Pet Follows You From Room to Room?
OK so here’s the thing about this one… the message behind your pet following you room-to-room is actually different for every single animal and human relationship. Because animals are always teaching at the soul level, the same behavior can carry a completely different meaning depending on who’s on the receiving end.
For one person, a pet who follows them everywhere might be helping them experience what it truly feels like to be unconditionally loved. To have someone so committed to being near you that they literally trail you from room to room! For another person, that exact same behavior might be their animal’s way of nudging them to speak up, claim their own space, stop shrinking.
Same behavior. Completely opposite soul lessons.
This is why you can’t just look up what your pet’s behavior means in some chart somewhere. The message lives inside your specific relationship. What matters isn’t only what they’re doing… it’s what it is stirring up in you.

What Is Your Pet Trying to Tell You Through Physical Symptoms and Health Changes?
Physical changes, things like low energy, appetite shifts, unusual lethargy, are some of the most emotionally loaded signs to navigate because they’re the ones that send us straight to the vet in a panic. And yes, please… always address physical symptoms at the physical level. That part is super important!
But here’s what I’ve found after 25+ years of this work: there is also always a bigger message. Always. In every experience we have with our pets, there’s something for us to learn at the soul level too.
Now that doesn’t mean your pet’s low appetite is directly connected to something specific you’re doing or not doing. It’s not that literal. What it means is that every situation involving your animal is also an opportunity for you. To look at yourself. To notice what this situation is bringing up in you. Because that’s where the learning lives, and that’s where the growing happens.
So when your pet goes through something physical, address it physically, absolutely. And then stop and ask yourself: is this situation triggering me? Because if it is, that’s your signal that that’s ALSO something worth paying attention to.
What Are The Signs Your Pet Senses Your Emotions and Is Responding To Them?
Animals don’t just “pick up” on our emotions. They’re actually intuitively connected to our thoughts, our fears, our worries, our ideas… pretty much our whole inner world. And when they’re responding to what they’re intuitively noticing in us, they shift in a corresponding way.
They might come find you and stay closer than usual. They might get really still, or go completely the opposite direction and get goofy and silly, like they’re trying to shake something loose in the room. (My dog Oscar does this. He picks the most inconvenient moment to act like a complete goofball, and somehow it’s always exactly the right moment.) Some animals put their body right on you in a very deliberate way. Others just show up and stay.
What separates this from regular behavior is the timing. It’s you they’re responding to, not something in their environment. When your pet recalibrates specifically around you… when you’re stressed or sad or stuck in your head… that’s communication. They’re not just noticing how you feel. They’re actively doing something about it.
How To Know If Your Pet Is Really Sending You a Telepathic Message?
This can be hard for some people to figure out (short of taking an animal communication class with me!). But there is one thing that works better than anything else: check in with yourself about whether the situation is triggering you.
The difference between a pet reacting to something in their environment, a new food, a loud noise, a change in routine, and a pet sending you a deliberate intuitive message isn’t always visible from the outside. Both can look exactly the same behaviorally! But here’s the real distinction: if the situation is genuinely triggering something in you, stirring up an old worry, a familiar pattern, a feeling you recognize… that’s almost always a sign that something bigger is going on.
When we get triggered, it’s because something meaningful is happening. And our pets know this. They are incredibly precise about it, actually! So if your pet’s behavior or health situation is getting under your skin in a way that feels bigger than the situation itself, trust that. Look at what it’s touching in you. That’s where the message is.
And if you’re not triggered at all? It might genuinely just be an upset stomach.

What Your Pet Wants You to Know Right Now, According to Animal Communication
Across thousands of readings over 25+ years, the most consistent message I hear from animals is this: they do not want you to beat yourself up.
That’s it. That’s the message. Over and over and over again.
They don’t want you feeling like you’re not good enough as their caretaker. They don’t hold your mistakes against you the way you hold them against yourself. The time you snapped at them, or forgot the water bowl, or couldn’t afford the treatment you wish you could have gotten… they don’t look at those moments as mistakes. They look at them as learning. As part of the whole picture of what it means to live and grow alongside each other.
What they want you to know right now is that you are loved. Unconditionally. Completely. The love between you and your animal doesn’t require you to be perfect in order to be real.
They already accept you as you are. The work of accepting yourself the same way… that’s the lesson so many of them are actually here to help you with.
How to Receive and Understand the Messages Your Pet Is Sending You
The shift from maybe noticing a sign here or there to actually receiving the sign purposefully comes down to this: start paying attention to your own inner response, not just your pet’s outer behavior.
Here’s the exercise. When something your pet does catches your attention, when a behavior or a symptom or a moment stops you, don’t just ask “what does this mean?” Ask “what is this bringing up in me?” If something’s getting triggered, there’s a message there. If nothing’s getting triggered, you can let it go.
That’s really it. That’s where it starts.
If you want to keep exploring this with other people who totally get it, my Be Open Community is a really wonderful place to do exactly that. It’s full of animal lovers asking these same questions, noticing these same signs, and figuring out together what their animals are really trying to show them. You don’t have to have it all figured out yet. You just have to be open.
