Danielle and Kevin

Different Strokes for Different Folks (Darn it!)

Danielle and KevinThree months ago I wrote a blog post about how my husband, Kevin and I were starting the P90X workout program. I thought this exercise program would give Kevin and I a new “thing” to bond over – as well as get my butt in shape. Plus, it sounded intriguing to leave the yoga behind for a while and trying something new. I remember thinking to myself “this will be easy and I can’t wait to get back in shape!” I was also secretly thinking “wow-my husband is so skinny – can’t wait to see some muscles on him!” (But don’t tell him that.)

We moved through the intense three-month program with surprising ease – because we were motivating and supporting each other. We would get up at 5am together, march out to the poolhouse and push ourselves hard for hour and fifteen minutes six times per week. Kevin became so much stronger. He developed man-boobs (the good kind). He got six-pack abs. (Nothing like a little six-pack to put some spring back into the step of a 22-year old relationship!) He even began examining his food choices more closely and created a week’s worth of brand new recipes based on what he thought would keep him most fit. The p90X program was clearly the exact right match for him in exercise. And this made me jealous.

I just wasn’t getting the jaw-dropping physical changes that Kevin was having. I wasn’t developing the cool muscles, my butt was in the same place and I was coming away from each workout missing that refreshed “Ah! I just worked out!” feeling. I started to realize that  exercise isn’t just about developing muscles and a good butt, it’s also about the release that comes along with it. And if you are not doing the right exercise for your individual “Self” you will not get that release. Without knowing it, seven years ago when I began yoga seriously, I had actually “zeroed in” on the perfect exercise for me and since that time I had been quietly releasing pent up energy, frustration, anger and anxiety through it. The p90x, while perfect for Kevin, did not work for me.

So, in the end guess what? I am going back to yoga and Kevin is moving on to the next program in the P90x series called “Insanity.” Yeah, that doesn’t really sound right for me does it? Can you imagine me trying to release my anxiety into an hour long INSANE series of jump-tucks with thirty-second breaks? Me either. It’s not going to work. Of course this made me sad in the beginning because there was nothing I wanted more than to be able to do all of these fun things with Kevin – I had really loved this new piece in our relationship. But I now know that I must exercise in the way that best suits my body. I can’t force my body to love the p90x like Kevin’s does, but I can stay on the same workout schedule as him, we can both look at our food choices together now and we can celebrate each others muscles all while I am getting that wonderful “Ah!” feeling I’ve been looking for!

Your story matches my dilemma. I know I have ‘something’ within me that picks up some peoples problems. I would say a bit stronger empathy than some.
My problem is I have no set ‘formula’ for figuring things out. and I was hoping it might be like the way one or two of the psychics I had seen do their readings.
Something had been gnawing at me for the past couple of weeks; but for the life of me nothing would come to me. It was such a strong ‘unknowing’it drove me crazy.lets just say the choices of who or where it was coming from was a bit overwhelming.
well 2 separate things occurred. my girfriend’s daughter who is very excited about the “metaphysical’ has been having some unsettling dreams. I suspect she has used the OUIJA BOARD and tends to unwittingly be heading towards the more Gothic way of looking and acting. I tried to explain her dreams the best I could..that you must haveLight, God or whatever your belief in higher being is whenever you practice ,dabble or really do a reading.
The other came to me when I decided to just stop trying to figure it out and do my bills.I recently divorced on jan of this year. very draining, because only in the past year or so have I figured out what a pathological liar he really is and sometimes will sink as low as it takes to get his way. It turns out he has been using my cable account to watch movies and tv on his work computer because i get it for free but never signed up. The worse part is he has been using the voice option for looking at the numbers i dial and the numbers that call me. There is also a recorded part of each call that ranges from few seconds to 1/2 hr. I KNEW something was being hidden from me. any way im hoping to work at any thing that help me to get answers. I want to read about Aura’s too. Im so jealous Ive never been able to discern any light or colors eminateing from someone; but I know someone who has. I hope I didnt stry too far from your originl point. But I had to find out what was going on. thankx for sharing too!!

    Hi Danielle

Well done for listening to your body!..after all isn’t that your forte? Yes I agree its the about the release that comes along with it. I do yoga and my favourite bit is when I lie on the yoga matt with a blanket in Shavasna (is that spelt right?!) and just release and lie there for 10 mins or so completely in bliss and relaxed as that was what the intention was when beguinning the class. Blessings to you Danielle X Namaste

Love the picture of you and Kevin and you’ve got such a great smile! However, you are right. P90X is not for everyone. I was seriously out of shape starting it but not extremely overweight. The workouts were hard but I’ve found that the time factor was not working for me. I get up at 5:00 am too but it’s to have breakfast with my husband before he goes to work, then it many daily tasks before I head out. So that left evenings but evenings didn’t always work either, especially for a 1.5 hour work out (I have to take many breaks). I’m still at it but not everyday. No, it’s not entirely for me but there are things that DO work for me. Hated the yoga in the beginning but starting to like it now. It must have been a breeze for you. Also like the cardio stuff that gets the stress out of my system and the shoulder and arm workouts. I have zip for upper muscle!!! I ordered Power 90 and hope to incorporate the two together to create a work out for me that works. I have missed about 4 days or more already due to unforseen events (car trouble, death in family, cat sprayed by skunk) so life goes on and I do the best I can! Thanks for sharing your experience with it!
