If you’ve asked that question, you’re probably not doing it once. You’re asking it when you walk past their favorite spot. When you think you hear them. When something happens and your first instinct is still to tell them.
And I get it. Because here’s what I know after 25+ years as an animal communicator: that feeling that they’re still around? It’s worth paying attention to.
Not because it feels nice to believe. But because in all my years of connecting intuitively with animals who’ve crossed to the Other Side, deceased dogs are not gone. They’re just different now. And they actually have a LOT to say about it.
Is My Dead Dog Watching Over Me? What Does Animal Communication Tell Us
Deceased dogs love watching over their humans and from what they’ve consistently told me, they don’t experience their death as the end of the relationship at all. They’re still energetically, emotionally and intuitively connected to you, still interested in your life, and still have things they want to share. The connection shifts, but it doesn’t stop.
One of the things that surprises people most is this: your dog isn’t experiencing their passing the way you’re experiencing their loss. For them, it’s not an ending. And they want you to know that.
Here’s something else worth knowing… it’s not just the dog you most recently lost who might be around you. Every animal who’s ever been part of your life can still be close. The dog from your childhood, the one you had ten years ago… they’re all still part of your world, just on the Other Side now.
Plus, the intuitive connection they had with you when they were alive like picking up on your thoughts, your worries, your ideas, your daily emotional weather — that doesn’t go away when they cross over. If anything, a lot of the animals I connect with on the Other Side have MORE to say than they did when they were here. It’s kind of wild, actually.
What “Watching Over You” Actually Means for a Dog on the Other Side
“Watching over you” doesn’t mean your dog is staring down at you from some distant cloud 24/7 or checking you out while you’re in the bathroom. (That would exhaust anyone, including them!) It’s more like… checking in. Being around for the moments that matter. Dropping by (and this is a real thing) specifically because they know their presence helps, even when you can’t consciously feel it.
They also have their own existence on the Other Side. They connect with other humans who were important to them when they were alive. They’re not just sitting around waiting. They have things going on.
But “watching over you” also means something I find really cool: they send intuitive nudges from the Other Side to help guide you. Like if you’ve been going back and forth on a big decision, and suddenly the same answer keeps showing up three different ways via a conversation you have, something on TV, something that arrives in the mail… your dog may actually be orchestrating that! Deliberately getting the message through to you by finding multiple routes to the same idea. That’s not a coincidence. That is literally what they do.
Can My Dead Dog Still See Me and Know What I’m Doing?
Yes. Deceased dogs have real awareness of their human’s daily life, not just in a vague “they’re watching over you” way, but in specific, sometimes startlingly detailed ways. This awareness comes from the deep soul level connection that was there when they were alive, and it doesn’t get cut off when they cross over.
In animal communication readings, I’ve had dogs on the Other Side bring up upcoming doctor’s appointments, who their human’s been spending time with, whether their person’s been sleeping well… things that couldn’t be guessed. One dog mentioned that their human kept canceling their dentist appointment and made it pretty clear it was time to actually go. Which is so specific and a little funny and also completely in character for a dog who loves their person enough to notice.
Does My Dead Dog Know When I Am Sad or Struggling?
Yes, your deceased dog knows when you’re struggling emotionally, in your day-to-day life, and even in the ways you might not even be fully aware of yourself. And they tend to want to be close during those times specifically, because they know their presence helps.
They’re aware of your grief. They know you miss them. And the thing that comes through so consistently from dogs on the Other Side when their human is in pain… they want their person to be happy. Not in a “get over it” way (not even close!). But it’s more like they want you to take the love and the lessons from your relationship with them and carry those forward. They don’t want you to stay stuck in the loss – as the more stuck in the loss you are, the harder it is for them to send you signs!
Signs Your Deceased Dog Is Watching Over You Right Now
There are so many ways deceased dogs (and actually, all animals on the Other Side) send signs to let their humans know they’re still around. A scent that comes from seemingly nowhere, movement in the corner of your eye that felt like them, their collar sound in the background when everything’s quiet, thinking of them so strongly it feels like more than memory.

Is My Dog in Heaven Watching Me? What Do Dogs Really Say About Where They Are
Based on what animals have communicated to me about the Other Side, the afterlife is not one fixed “location” that every dog goes to. It’s more like a version of perfection that’s uniquely tailored to each animal. And it’s not far or in some distant, removed place.
Our human brains genuinely can’t fully grasp what the Other Side actually is, so the way the animals have found to share it with me is through images and descriptions that make sense to us. A dog who loved bounding through woods and splashing in bogs will describe something with woods and bogs. A dog who preferred dry, quiet indoor environments will describe that version. It’s how they can communicate something our language doesn’t quite have words for.
And every single time, it’s just… exactly what you would expect for that particular animal!
One of my favorite moments in animal communication readings is when I describe what an animal’s Other Side looks like and their person immediately lights up and goes “Oh yes, that’s SO them.” One dog showed me surrounded by absolutely enormous piles of dog treats, just completely delighted. Their human’s reaction was basically: “Yes. Obviously. Of course that’s their version of the afterlife!”
They’re not far. They’re not cut off from you. They have kept their connection with you in a totally new way.
How to Feel Your Deceased Dog’s Presence More Clearly
The biggest thing that opens the door to feeling your dog’s presence is getting yourself to a calm, neutral place( not closed off, but not overexcited either). That in-between spot is where the connection is easiest.
Here are four steps that actually work:
Step 1: Get to neutral. This one matters more than people realize. Deep grief, active crying, or even that over-excited “please please please show me a sign” energy can actually make it harder for your dog to get through to you. Not impossible, just harder. A few slow breaths, let yourself just be for a minute. That’s all you need.
Step 2: Don’t ask for a specific sign. Yah, it’s tempting. But when you decide ahead of time that you want a white butterfly or a specific song, two things happen: you miss every other sign they’re sending, and you set yourself up to feel like it didn’t work. Let them decide. They genuinely know what they’re doing.
Step 3: Ask out loud. Actually say, out loud: “I’d love a sign that you’re around me.” Speaking it creates real intention and opens up the connection in a way that thinking it doesn’t quite do the same way.
Step 4: Stay open to anything. The more open-minded you are about what a sign could look like, the easier it is for your dog to get one through to you. Don’t dismiss the small stuff. Don’t explain away the “coincidences.” Just stay curious and open – and perhaps even write everything down.
How Animal Communication Can Help You Know Your Dog Is Still With You
There’s a real difference between hoping your dog is watching over you… and knowing it.
Hope is beautiful. And it’s where most people live for a long time. But what happens in an animal communicator reading, when a deceased dog mentions something so specific that it could only be them, is that hope turns into something more solid. Something that changes how you walk around in the world.
I had a client whose dog came through in a session with full awareness of a ceremony their human had held for them on a beach — a fire pit, a poem they’d written, the whole thing. They hadn’t told anyone about it. Their deceased dog knew. Not only knew, but was clearly there for it. The tears in that reading were not grief tears.
That’s what animal communication can do: move you from wondering to knowing.
