Different types of mediums are… well, let me start by saying we’re definitely NOT talking about art supplies here! (Though I did love to watercolor when I was a little kid.) We’re talking about people who have developed their intuitive ability to connect with the spiritual realm and communicate with those who have passed over to the Other Side.
You know how some people seem to just “know” things? Or they get feelings about situations that turn out to be spot-on? Mediums have taken that natural intuitive ability and focused it specifically on connecting with spirits – whether they’re beloved humans or our beloved animal companions who’ve crossed over.
And here’s something really cool that people don’t always realize… not every medium works the same way, and not every medium can connect with both people AND animals. It’s actually a pretty specialized skill set!
What Are the Different Types of Mediums
When most people think of mediums, they picture someone connecting with deceased human loved ones (and yes, that’s definitely a huge part of mediumship). But there’s actually so much more to it than that.
The different types of mediums each have their own specialties and ways of receiving information from the spiritual realm. Let’s break down the main ones…
But first, in my world of animal communication, I work with what I call Soul Level Animal Communication®, and part of that includes connecting with animals who have crossed over. Not all animal communicators are mediums – but the ones I train in my school absolutely are. They can all connect with animals that have made their transition to the Other Side, which is such a beautiful gift for grieving pet parents.
What is a Psychic Medium?
A psychic medium is someone who connects specifically with deceased human beings. You’ve probably seen them on TV – think Tyler Henry, John Edward, or Theresa Caputo (the Long Island Medium!). These mediums use their intuitive abilities to receive messages from people who have passed away.
They might work one-on-one with clients, connecting them with a specific loved one who’s crossed over. Or they might work in larger group settings where they never know which spirits will show up, and then they have to match that spirit’s message to someone in the audience. (Can you imagine the pressure of a thousand faces staring up at you? But also how amazing when it all clicks!)
Psychic mediums often receive information in multiple ways – through images, words, emotions, physical sensations, or just sudden “knowing.” It’s like the deceased loved ones (humans) use whatever communication method will get through most clearly.
What Are Spiritual Mediums?
Now, depending on who you talk to, spiritual mediums and psychic mediums are pretty much the same thing. They work similarly and tend to have comparable viewpoints on spirituality and the afterlife.
The term “spiritual medium” sometimes gets used when someone wants to emphasize the sacred, healing nature of the work rather than just the “psychic” aspect. But functionally? They’re connecting with deceased loved humans and bringing through messages of love, healing, and closure.
What is a Clairvoyant Medium?
This is where it gets more specific! A clairvoyant medium primarily uses psychic sight to connect with deceased loved ones. “Clairvoyant” literally means “clear seeing,” so these mediums receive information mainly through visual images, quick little movies, and symbols.
While a regular psychic or spiritual medium might receive information through multiple channels (hearing words, feeling emotions, getting sudden insights), a clairvoyant medium’s strength is in visuals. They might see the deceased loved one, see symbolic images that represent messages, or receive information through mental pictures.
It’s like having one really strong intuitive “sense” that they’ve learned to trust and interpret beautifully.

Different Types of Mediums in Communication
When we talk about the different ways mediums actually receive and share information, it gets really interesting! The method of communication can vary so much from medium to medium, and understanding these differences can help you know what to expect.
Some mediums are more clairaudient, receiving direct mind-to-mind communication via words and phrases. Others might feel physical sensations that give them information about how someone passed or what they were experiencing. And then there are mediums who primarily work through symbols and metaphors that they’ve learned to interpret over time.
What Types of Medium Can Be Used to Communicate?
The most common type is telepathic communication – where the medium receives thoughts, images, words, or feelings directly from the deceased loved one (AKA spirit). It’s like having a conversation, except one person isn’t physically here anymore!
But there are other ways too. Some mediums use automatic writing, where they allow the spirit to guide their hand as they write. Others might work with tools like pendulums or even just their own body’s energy responses to yes/no questions.
What I teach in my Soul Level Animal Communication® method focuses heavily on that telepathic connection, but we also pay attention to physical sensations, emotions, and visual imagery. Animals on the Other Side are incredibly good at getting their messages through in whatever way works best for each individual communicator.
Physical Medium vs. Mental Medium
OK, this is where things get a little confusing because “physical medium” is often misunderstood or mistyped. What people usually mean is the difference between a psychic medium and a mental medium (also known as a mentalist).
A psychic medium uses genuine intuitive abilities – they don’t need any physical objects or photos to connect with deceased loved ones. They’re tapping into actual spiritual communication.
A mentalist, on the other hand, uses the power of observation and data gathering to appear psychic. They’re incredibly skilled at reading body language, making educated guesses, and using techniques that can seem mystical but are really based on sharp observation skills. (It’s actually quite impressive in its own right, but it’s not the same as actual psychic ability!)
Spiritual Medium vs Psychic vs Clairvoyant
So here’s how these three relate to each other:
A psychic medium connects with deceased humans using various intuitive abilities – they might see, hear, feel, or just “know” information from spirits.
A spiritual medium is essentially the same thing, just with an emphasis on the sacred, healing nature of the work.
A clairvoyant medium is a specific type who primarily receives information through visual psychic impressions.
It’s like this: if mediumship is a big umbrella, psychic mediums and spiritual mediums are pretty much the same thing under that umbrella, while clairvoyant mediums are a specific subset who work primarily through visual information.

Can Mediums Communicate With Animals?
This is such a great question, and the answer might surprise you! Not all mediums can communicate with animals. Most mediums specialize specifically in deceased human loved ones – and that’s their area of expertise.
However, many mediums do desire to develop animal communication skills over time. Why? Because there are SO many beloved pets on the Other Side who want to come through with messages for their humans! I can’t tell you how often I’ve seen this happen in readings.
Here’s the thing though – all mediums are not animal communicators, and all animal communicators are not mediums. But there are definitely plenty of us who work with both. In my school, I specifically train people to connect with animals both here in the physical world AND on the Other Side, because that connection doesn’t end when our pets cross over.
Is Animal Communication Real?
Absolutely! And I know that might sound biased coming from someone who’s been doing this work for over 20 years, but the evidence is everywhere once you start paying attention.
Animals are constantly communicating with us – through their behavior, their energy, their reactions to things. They’re incredibly intuitive beings who are naturally tapped into that spiritual communication we humans have to work to redevelop.
The beautiful thing is that animals WANT to communicate with us. They want us to understand them, to know what they need, and to realize how much they love us. Both here and from the Other Side, they’re doing everything they can to get their messages through.
Can Mediums Communicate With Dead Pets?
Yes, absolutely! And this is one of the most healing types of readings I do. When someone has lost a beloved animal companion, being able to connect with that pet on the Other Side can bring such incredible peace and closure.
Animals on the Other Side often want their humans to know:
- They’re not in pain anymore
- They’re happy and free
- They understand why decisions were made (like euthanasia)
- They’re still watching over their family
- They want their humans to be happy, not consumed with grief
What I find amazing is that animals on the Other Side often have such wisdom to share. They understand the bigger picture of their life with us in ways that can be really profound and healing.
The key is finding someone who specifically works with animals in spirit, because it does require a different approach than communicating with deceased humans.
How to Choose an Animal Communicator
If you’re looking for someone to help you connect with your pet (whether they’re here or crossed over), there are definitely some things to keep in mind!
First, trust your gut. If someone feels right to you, that’s important. Your own intuition is picking up on something or perhaps your pet is guiding you in that direction.
Look for someone who has actual training and experience. Animal communication isn’t just something you wake up one day and decide to do professionally – it requires skill development and practice and dedication.
Ask about their background. Do they work with animals both here and on the Other Side? What’s their approach? Do they focus on just the physical level (“What food does your dog prefer?”) or do they go deeper into the soul level connection?
And please, please be wary of anyone who claims to be 100% accurate all the time. That’s just not how this work functions. Even the most skilled communicators are human, and we’re translating information from a completely different realm!
How to Become an Animal Communicator?
Oh, I SO love this question because it means someone is feeling that pull to explore their own intuitive abilities!
The truth is that everyone can learn to communicate intuitively with animals. It’s not some special gift that only a chosen few possess – it’s actually a natural ability we’re all born with. We just tend to shut it down as we get older and more “logical.”
In my Soul Level Animal Communication® courses, I teach people to reconnect with this innate ability. We start with energy management (because you need to be in the right space energetically), then move through techniques for connecting with animals both physically and at the soul level.
The most important thing? Practice, practice, practice. And be patient with yourself. Like any skill, this takes time to develop trust and confidence in what you’re receiving.
If you’re feeling called to this work, I’d say trust that calling. The animals need more people who can bridge that communication gap, and there’s nothing more beautiful than helping someone reconnect with their beloved companion – whether that pet is curled up in their lap or watching over them from the Other Side.
