What’s anxiety got to do with it? WCT #13

by Danielle MacKinnon

I just got back from my Barre class and I’m sitting down to write this email to you and it’s later than usual so I’m feeling anxious because I’m a little behind.

But then, I remind myself how could I possibly be behind? I set my own schedule and I can write my emails whenever I want! The only “timeline” I have going on right now is the one in my head.

So, I’ve laughed at myself for that, and the little niggling anxiety just melted away.

It’s taken me a long time to get to this place though. In the past, I could never have just laughed at myself and have the pain release. In the distant past, I would have pushed through that anxiety, left it there, written the email as quickly as possible and then moved on to the rest of my day – all with that low-level worry continuing to hang around.

This is actually what a lot of people do. They are so used to feeling worried, concerned, and under pressure that they forget that that’s not their natural state.

Are you someone who does this?

If you do, then your energy has probably adjusted to a set point of constant anxiety. This means that, when you don’t have anything to be anxious about, you feel uncomfortable because your energy desires to be back to “anxious.”

Anxiety is what your body/mind/spirit knows and therefore anxiety is what your body/mind/spirit seeks out.

To top that off, it means that when you’re comfortable, you’re anxious! You actually become comfortable with your own anxiety – which in turn means that you’re not often able to tell when you are not anxious from when you are anxious.

It’s this little circular pattern that so many people get in to that doesn’t serve them in any way, but that they have no clue they are in!

What’s the solution?

I’m laughing – if you’ve been reading my emails for any length of time you can probably guess what I’m going to say. If you’re new to my work, you may not know… YET!

The solution is energy management.  Doing tools and techniques to bring yourself out of that anxiety and slowly retrain your energetic set point to start align with calm, not worry.

BUT there’s a trick. When do you do those tools and techniques (see a whole slew of them here)? If you don’t know when to do them, it’s not going to help you shift anything.

So, to REALLY master energy management, you actually have to start with awareness. Yeah, it’s not sexy, but it’s the most helpful, most transformative thing you can do for yourself (it’s also this week’s Wicked Cool tool!)

And here’s all you have to do to start: begin noticing your thoughts.

1.     Notice WHAT the thoughts are (Oh no! What do I do here?)

2.     Notice WHEN they occur (I always think that after talking to Abby)

3.     Notice WHY they occur (always when I feel jealous)

4.     Notice the CADENCE of your thoughts (Oh there I go thinking a mile a minute again)

As you do this, you’ll start to see patterns – and it’s those patterns that will help you determine the best times to do one of your energy management tools.

One more thing: NONE of this is about beating yourself up. It’s just about clarity. Understanding yourself in a new way. Coming to a place where you see – “OH there’s that anxiety popping up again” and can laugh at it rather than to a place where you’re judging yourself for feeling jealous.

Play with this and see where it takes you!

This is so on the mark for me! And, as you said, I didn’t even realize it. Thanks for helping me become aware of this and choose something different.
