Animal communication examples are everywhere around us – from the purring cat rubbing against your leg to the horse that suddenly seems to understand exactly what you’re thinking. For over two decades, I’ve been connecting psychically with animals, and I’ve discovered that animals are constantly communicating with us – we just need to learn how to listen… and trust what we’re receiving!
You know how sometimes you just know what your pet wants? That’s not a coincidence – it’s actually the beginning of animal communication! Animals communicate in ways that go far beyond what we typically notice. They’re not just responding to our words or body language; they’re tuning into our emotions, our energy, and even our thoughts. This deep level of communication is something we’re ALL born with the ability to do, but many of us have forgotten how (or been told it’s not possible!).
What Animals Communicate with Each Other?
Animals have these amazing, sophisticated communication systems among themselves. For example, horses use subtle body language to establish herd hierarchy and share information about potential dangers. Dogs communicate through this complex combination of body posture, tail position, ear movement, and vocalizations.
But here’s what most people don’t realize… animals also communicate with each other on an energetic and intuitive level. I’ve witnessed this countless times. Like when my dog Tuukka would somehow know minutes before my other dog Oscar would return home from a walk. There was NO physical way she could have heard or seen him coming, but she would get up and wait by the door in anticipation. (And she’s kind of independent, so this wasn’t her normal behavior at all!)
This intuitive communication between animals is something they do naturally, without all the overthinking that we humans tend to bring to our interactions. Animals don’t second-guess their intuition the way we do – they just go with it!

What Are Some Animal Communication Examples?
When it comes to how animals communicate with humans, I’ve seen SO many incredible examples in my work:
- A cat repeatedly knocking things off a specific shelf to draw attention to a hidden water leak (the owner thought the cat was just being annoying until they found the mold behind the wall!)
- A dog staring intensely at a specific area of their human’s body where an undiagnosed health issue was developing (and yes, when the person finally went to the doctor, they found something!)
- A horse refusing to enter a stable due to an electrical issue that was later discovered (the human thought the horse was just being stubborn…)
- A bird that would only sing when its person was feeling sad or depressed (talk about emotional support!)
These communications aren’t random behaviors – they’re deliberate attempts to share information. In my practice, I’ve found that animals are often trying to help their humans understand something important, whether it’s about their physical needs or something deeper on a Soul Level.
How Do Animals Use Sound to Communicate?
Sound is one of the most obvious ways animals communicate with humans. Your dog’s different barks, your cat’s various meows – these aren’t just noise; they’re language! And each sound has a different meaning… if only we would listen!
One of my clients had a cat named Squeak who would meow LOUDLY throughout the entire time the woman cooked dinner. Through our communication session, I discovered that Squeak wasn’t just being annoying – she was actually mirroring her human’s chaotic energy when she came home from work. Squeak was essentially saying, “Slow down! You’re too frantic!” Once my client started taking a few moments to center herself before beginning dinner preparations, Squeak’s “talking” significantly decreased. (Plus, my client felt a whole lot better too!)
But animal sounds go beyond the obvious physical barks and meows. In my animal communication work, I’ve connected with animals who’ve shown me how they use sounds psychically too! Like the cat who telepathically sent her human the sound of a specific meow when she was stuck in a neighbor’s garage… and her human just “heard” it in her head and knew exactly where to find her. Or the dog who could telepathically send the sound of his specific bark to his person when they were separated and he needed help. And I’ve had SO many clients tell me they heard their animal’s distinctive sound in their mind days after the animal crossed over – that’s not imagination or grief… that’s your animal literally communicating with you from the Other Side! Sound is one of the easiest ways for animals to reach us psychically because it triggers our memory and emotional connection.
Animal Visual Communication Examples
Visual communication is another rich area of animal expression that I’m totally fascinated by! Some examples that I’ve seen over the years (and there are SO many) include:
- A dog who would bring specific toys to signal specific needs (a ball for play, a leash for walking, a specific blanket when she wasn’t feeling well… like, how smart is that?!)
- A cat who would sit by different windows depending on whether they wanted to go outside or were alerting to something outside (like the difference between “let me out” and “there’s a strange cat in our yard!”)
- A rabbit who would thump his foot in a specific pattern when his water needed changing (and would thump differently when he wanted treats… smart bunny!)
But here’s what most people miss… animals communicate visually on a psychic level too! I’ve had SO many experiences connecting with animals who show me visual images telepathically. Like the dog who sent his person an image of where his favorite toy was hidden… under the neighbor’s porch! Or the cat who could share an image of the thorn in his paw.
And when it comes to animals who’ve crossed over? Well, they’re also amazing at visual communication! They often show up in their person’s dreams with incredible clarity and detail. And those “glimpses” you get of your deceased pet out of the corner of your eye? That’s not your imagination or grief playing tricks on you… that’s your pet actually showing themselves to you! Animals on the Other Side LOVE to appear in places that were significant to them during life – their favorite sunny spot, their special chair, or wherever you shared special moments together.
One particularly memorable example involved a horse named Ticonderoga. Her human, Rhea, was struggling with self-doubt about whether she was the right person to be rehabilitating this rescue horse. Through our communication session, I discovered that Ticonderoga had been deliberately sending Rhea mental images of them together in the future, successfully competing and bonding. Ticonderoga would also make direct eye contact with Rhea when she sensed her human’s confidence was low – it was her way of saying, “I see you, and I chose YOU.” Just that small visual connection (both physical and psychic!) was enough to help both of them feel more confident in their relationship.
Three Real Examples of Animal Behavior
Here are three specific examples from my practice that illustrate the depth of animal communication:
- Jesus the Chihuahua: This little six-pound Chihuahua was deliberately peeing in a plant in his human’s kitchen. When I connected with him psychically, I discovered something REALLY surprising – he only did this when his human needed to take better care of herself. His human was in an abusive relationship, and Jesus was trying to interrupt her patterns and make her pause to reflect. He told me, “I only pee in the kitchen when the hitting is happening.” He had an Animal Soul Contract with the woman, and it was his job to help her learn how to take care of herself. As she learned to value herself more, his behavior changed too.
- Kelso and Sensitivity: My own dog Kelso was extremely sensitive to loud noises, aggression, and conflict. Through our relationship, I realized he was mirroring my own unacknowledged sensitivity. His reactions to things like TV shows with high tension (like that old Keifer Sutherland show, “24”) helped me recognize my own anxiety triggers. By acknowledging my sensitivity rather than pushing through it (which I’d done my whole life!), I was able to eliminate panic attacks that had troubled me for years – and Kelso became calmer too. He taught me that sensitivity isn’t a weakness… it’s actually a superpower!
- Bella and Self-Worth: A client’s dog Bella would jump up excitedly on EVERY visitor. The more my client tried to control this behavior and failed, the worse she felt about herself as an animal communicator. Through our work together, she realized Bella was reflecting her own self-worth challenges. When my client stopped tying her professional value to her ability to “control” Bella psychically, both she and Bella became more relaxed, and Bella’s jumping decreased naturally. It wasn’t about controlling the dog at all… it was about my client learning to accept herself!
Can Humans and Animals Communicate?
Absolutely! Humans and animals are communicating all the time, whether we’re aware of it or not. This happens on both the physical level (the stuff we can see and hear) AND the psychic level (the energy, thoughts, and feelings we exchange without words).
On the physical level, cats and humans are constantly exchanging information:
- Your cat rubbing against your leg (they’re marking you as theirs… but also asking for dinner!)
- Your dog bringing you a toy with that hopeful look (no explanation needed!)
- The way your horse relaxes when you enter the barn (they recognize your energy)
- Even that wild bird that seems to follow you around your yard (they’re trying to tell you something!)
But the really magical stuff happens on the psychic level. This is where we experience those “how did they know?” moments:
- Knowing what your pet wants without obvious signals (like when you just KNOW they need to go outside)
- Thinking about your cat and having them appear moments later (not a coincidence!)
- Feeling a sudden urge to check on your pet and finding they need help (your intuition was speaking to you!)
- Having a wild animal approach you in an unusual way (they sensed your energy!)
The challenge isn’t in making the communication happen – it’s happening ALL the time already! The real work is in becoming conscious of it and learning to trust what we’re receiving. Once you start recognizing these connections, you’ll notice them EVERYWHERE. And it’s SO much easier than most people think!

What is Telepathic Animal Communication?
Telepathic animal communication is the intuitive exchange of thoughts, feelings, and images between humans and animals. It goes beyond observing behavior or responding to sounds – it’s a direct mind-to-mind connection.
In my practice of Soul Level Animal Communication®, I’ve found that animals are MASTERS of this telepathic exchange. They’re naturally tuned into feelings and energy in ways that most humans have forgotten. When I connect with an animal telepathically, I might receive:
- Visual images from their perspective (like seeing through their eyes!)
- Physical sensations they’re experiencing (yes, I can feel their sore paw or itchy ear)
- Emotional impressions (their joy, fear, contentment, etc.)
- Direct thoughts or concepts (just like when you update your phone!)
- Symbolic information that requires interpretation (animals love metaphors!)
This telepathic connection isn’t limited by distance or even by whether the animal is physically alive. I’ve connected with animals thousands of miles away and with those who have crossed over to the Other Side. In fact, sometimes animals who have crossed over are even CLEARER in their communication because they’re not limited by physical bodies anymore!
What Animal Has the Best Communication?
People often ask me which animals communicate most clearly, and the answer might surprise you! While dogs and horses are often cited as being particularly communicative (and they are amazing!), I’ve found that EVERY species has its own unique communication superpowers.
Have you ever noticed how cats just STARE at you until you somehow know exactly what they want? That’s because cats tend to be incredibly precise in their telepathic messages – like little psychic ninjas! Birds often communicate with this incredible emotional detail that can bring tears to your eyes. And those animals that many people think are “simple”? Like hamsters or fish? Well, they can share some of the most remarkably complex information when we’re open to receiving it!
I once connected with a goldfish named Bubbles (yes, really!) who gave me this incredibly detailed map of where his human’s lost wedding ring had fallen behind the radiator. The look on her face when we found it exactly where he showed me… priceless!
In my experience, the clarity of animal communication has way less to do with the animal’s species and more to do with these three things:
- The animal’s individual personality and desire to communicate (some are chatty, some are quiet… just like people at a party!)
- The human’s openness and ability to receive without judgment (this is a HUGE factor – probably the biggest one!)
- The depth of the relationship between the animal and human (though you don’t need to know an animal personally to connect with them… I do this all the time!)
Want to know something that still blows my mind after 20+ years of doing this work? I’ve had some of my most profound communication experiences with animals you might NEVER expect – like a worm that shared this incredible wisdom about acceptance, or a wild raccoon that conveyed super detailed information about boundaries. Every single animal has wisdom to share… if we’re just willing to listen! (And trust what we’re receiving… that’s the tricky part for most of us!)
Can You Learn How to Talk to Animals?
Yes, you absolutely can! I believe that animal communication isn’t a special “gift” that only certain people have – it’s a natural ability we’re ALL born with that can be reawakened and developed. Think of it as remembering a language you used to know as a child!
I certainly didn’t start out thinking I would become an animal communicator. I was working in a Fortune 500 company, pursuing my MBA, when my dog Bella became gravely ill. In desperation, I took her to see an animal communicator – something completely outside my comfort zone at the time. I remember standing in a gym parking lot crying on my friend’s shoulder when she suggested, “Why don’t you take her to a pet psychic?”
That experience changed EVERYTHING for me. I realized that not only was animal communication real, but it was something I had been doing unconsciously my entire life. My sensitivity, which I had always seen as a weakness (and had been trying to hide since childhood!), was actually a strength that allowed me to connect deeply with animals.
I began studying and practicing, and eventually left my corporate career to devote myself to animal communication. (Yes, I left with just 4 classes remaining to complete my MBA… that’s how powerful this calling was!) Over the past 20+ years, I’ve taught thousands of students through my Soul Level Animal Communication® courses at the Omega Institute, the Kripalu Center, and through my online school.
What I’ve discovered is that learning animal communication is a lot like learning a language you once knew but have forgotten. The process is about remembering, not acquiring something new. My students are often AMAZED at how quickly they can begin receiving information from animals – usually by the second lesson of my course. (And yes, that means in just a couple of weeks!)
If you’re interested in developing your own animal communication abilities, here are some places to start:
- Begin with energy management: Learning to quiet your own thoughts and manage your energy is fundamental (and this helps in ALL areas of life!)
- Practice with animals you don’t know: This helps eliminate your preconceived ideas about what they might say
- Trust what you receive: Often the biggest barrier isn’t receiving information but trusting it (we all struggle with this at first!)
- Join a supportive community: Learning with others who share your interest accelerates growth (my Be Open Community is perfect for this!)
- Take structured courses: My Soul Level Animal Communication 101 course is designed to help beginners tap into their natural abilities
Whether you want to become a Horse communicator, become a Cat communicator or simply communicate better with your own pets, help animals who have crossed over, or even pursue animal communication professionally, the journey begins with openness and willingness to trust what you receive.
Remember, the animals are already trying to communicate with you – they’re just waiting for you to listen! And I promise, once you start really hearing them… your life will NEVER be the same again!
