No New Year’s Resolutions!

No New Year’s Resolutions!

2012First of all, Happy 2012! I remember twenty years ago looking at the year 2012 and thinking “Wow, that’s so far away! I’ll be old by then!” Well, it’s now officially 2012 and I don’t think I am that old – so it just goes to show you how perspective can really change. I am, however at an age where I see many people around me (clients, family, friends) beginning to question the happiness in their lives. And on top of that, we’re now, we’re in that weird part of the year where everyone decides that they want to “make changes” and “be a better person” and “get healthier.” You know what’s odd about that? Resolutions like this never work! I’ve found that those who say “OK on the first of the year I will…” or “Alright, once I have a 20% increase in income I will…” or “As soon as the kids are out of the house I will…” are actually preventing themselves from making the change. In other words, New Year’s Resolutions don’t do what they’re supposed to do!

People who wait for a certain date or a certain checking account balance or a certain home-situation to be exactly what they want it to be in order to make a change or feel a certain way about themselves are unknowingly throwing their happiness into the hands of outside circumstances. They are giving up the only true power they have over their own lives. If your sense of Self is based on your environment, then you will never have the control you’re looking for.  Your environment is always changing! Your weight, bank account, the economy, and even your relationships are in a constant flux. If you depend on these things for security, then any change in these areas could potentially make you feel fat, broke, unsuccessful, and more. If, on the other hand, you work to find that sense of security from WITHIN – then (and this is the coolest part) your desired changes actually become within reach. You can’t start change on the outside. It has to come from within. So – let go of your New Year’s Resolution. Stop worrying about what other people will say. If you want change in your life, today is the day. That’s the most empowering step you can take – just by doing it today.

I want to find this happiness, but I can’t see to get started. Right now my little dog is in the hospital, I can’t start till I know if George will be ok or not. I lost my job last year and can’t seem to find a new one, so for now I’m at home taking care of my family (kids, husband & doggies. I want to work with animals, I volunteer at a shelter and this is wonderful but they can’t hire me. I thought meditaton would help but I think I’m depressed and can’t seem to more forward! HELP!

Your message resonated with me. I too, have been where you are. My feed back to you is this: Don’t try and force meditation. It can’t happen when we are in a “restricted” state. What is it that calms you? One of my favorites is walking in nature, usually with my beloved dogs. The fresh air and movement always brings a sense of clarity. Next, find a quiet place to just sit and breathe. YES! I said breathe, slow deep breadths. In the stillness begin to give THANKS each day for all you do have. . . Your home that shelters you, your husband, children, furry companions and your health. Before we can move forward, we must make peace with our NOW.
    I hope this helps
    Wishing you peace

Thank you for the response. I will try anything to move my life forward cos right now I just can’t seem to move ahead. Depression maybe? The days tick away and I’m no better off than I was. My kids & husband notice that I get nothing done too. I try to set goals and still, nothing. No meditation, no reading books no nothing. Thank you so much for taking the time and care to respond. I will try what you are saying. Will let you know. Blessings to you!

Something else occurred to me. Do you have a doctor or practitioner that you trust? It sounds to me like you may need extra help. Nothing to be ashamed of. There are wonderful sources of help available to us now, more than ever before.
When I was suffering from anxiety and hormonal changes, My Dr. started me on a very low dose of lexapro, and it has changed my life! I believe in medication when it is for our highest good.
I hope that you will not be afraid to reach out and help yourself. . . YOU are the only one who can.
    Wishing you peace and strength
